Choosing the right bills of sale template
A bill of sale records that ownership of a specific item passed from a seller to a buyer for a stated price. Private sellers use one when they sell a car, boat, trailer or piece of equipment; buyers keep it as proof of purchase for registration, insurance and taxes. The essentials are the parties, an exact description with serial numbers or VIN, the price and payment method, the date, the condition (often as-is), and both signatures.
PDFBetter bills of sale are original fillable PDFs with item-specific fields: odometer disclosure on the vehicle form, hull and trailer numbers on the boat form, serial and hour meter readings on the equipment form. Some states and agencies require their own official form or notarization, so check with your motor vehicle or wildlife agency before relying on a general template.
Bill of sale templates: questions people ask
Does a bill of sale need to be notarized?
Most do not, but some states require notarization for certain vehicle or boat transfers. Check your state's motor vehicle or boating agency. This is not legal advice.
Does a bill of sale transfer the title?
No. For titled property such as most cars and many boats, the seller must also sign over the title certificate. The bill of sale documents the terms of the sale.
What does sold as-is mean?
The buyer accepts the item in its current condition and the seller makes no promises about it. Some states limit as-is sales for certain goods; check local rules.
Can both parties sign online?
Yes. Use Request signatures so buyer and seller each sign in the browser. If your state requires notarization, sign in front of a notary instead.
