What it does
Convert PDF, explained
Upload a file and PDFBetter shows the conversions that make sense for it: a PDF can become Word, Excel, PowerPoint, JPG, PNG, CSV or plain text; a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file or a JPG or PNG can become a PDF. Each choice links to a dedicated tool page that explains its options and limits.

Where a conversion runs depends on the format. PDF to JPG, PNG, TXT and CSV, and JPG or PNG to PDF, run in your browser: the file is not uploaded and the result is free without an account. Office conversions (to or from Word, Excel and PowerPoint) need desktop software we run on our own processing servers, so the file is uploaded for the job. Without an account you can run 2 of those to try them; the Free plan includes 10 a month and paid plans more.
Pick the output by what you will do next. Need to edit wording? Word. Need numbers in cells? Excel, or CSV for importing into another system. Need a picture of a page for a slide or a website? PNG for crisp text and diagrams, JPG for photos and smaller files. Need just the words? TXT.
Every converter shows what will happen before you run it, and each tool page lists what does not survive conversion, such as fonts that are not installed on our servers or layouts that cannot be represented in the target format.
How to do it
Convert PDF files in 4 steps
1Your PDF
2Convert
3The new format
- 1
Upload your file
PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, JPG or PNG. Password-protected files must be unlocked first.
- 2
Choose the output format
Only conversions that apply to your file are offered. Each is labeled “in your browser” or “on our servers”.
- 3
Set options
For example pages, image resolution, or OCR for scanned PDFs.
- 4
Convert and download
Browser conversions download right away. Server conversions show progress and then download.
Example
Before and after
A 3-page PDF quote received by email that needs a price change and a table pasted into a budget sheet.
Converted once to DOCX for the wording change and once to XLSX for the price table, from the same upload.

Good to know before you start
- Older formats (DOC, XLS, PPT, RTF, ODT, HEIC) are handled on their dedicated tool pages rather than this hub's upload box.
- Office conversions run on our servers, so they need an internet connection and count toward your monthly conversion allowance; browser conversions do not.
- No conversion between two non-PDF formats (for example Word to Excel). Convert to PDF first only if that matches what you need.
If something goes wrong
If something goes wrong
- The format I want is not offered
- Only conversions that apply to your file type appear. To go from an image to Word, for example, convert to PDF first and then use PDF to Word with OCR.
- A server conversion says I have reached my limit
- You have used this month's Office conversions. Browser conversions still work. Sign up, or upgrade, for a larger allowance.
Convert PDF: questions people ask
Which conversions are free without an account?
PDF to JPG, PNG, TXT and CSV, and JPG or PNG to PDF, run in your browser and are free without an account. Office conversions allow 2 tries without an account and 10 a month on the Free plan.
Is my file uploaded?
Only for Office conversions, which run on our processing servers; files from sessions without an account are deleted after 24 hours. Browser conversions never upload your file.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to Word?
Yes. Choose Word and turn on OCR so the scanned text becomes editable. Without OCR, a scan converts to pictures of pages.
Which is better for a page image, JPG or PNG?
PNG keeps text and line art sharp and supports transparency; JPG makes smaller files and suits photos. See PDF to PNG and PDF to JPG for details.
Can I convert several files at once?
This hub converts one file at a time. JPG to PDF and PNG to PDF accept many images in one go.
