What PDFBetter is

  • PDFBetter (pdfbetter.com) is a web-based PDF editor and document workflow product: edit existing PDF text, fill and build fillable forms, sign and request e-signatures, convert, compress, OCR, redact, share, fax, and AI tools that cite page numbers.
  • It runs in a web browser on desktop and mobile. PDFBetter has free desktop apps for Mac and Windows that use the same account and documents as the web; its iPhone and iPad app is coming soon to the App Store, and an Android app is coming soon.
  • Many page tools (merge, split, rotate, extract, organize, images to PDF, PDF to images, PDF to text, watermark, page numbers, password protect/unlock) run entirely in the browser: the file is not uploaded and the output can be downloaded free without an account.
  • Anyone can start any tool without an account. Edited documents need a free account to download, share or send; guest drafts are deleted 1 hour after they are created unless the person signs up, in which case they move into the account.

Plans and prices (USD)

  • Free: free. A real free plan: no card, no end date.
  • Pro: $15/month billed monthly or $10/month billed yearly. Everything one person needs, including e-signatures and forms.
  • Business: $24/month billed monthly or $18/month billed yearly, per seat. Teams, branding, bulk sending and an API.
  • Day Pass: $6 one-time. 24 hours of Pro for one-off jobs. No subscription, nothing renews.
  • AI credit pack: $5 one-time. 500 AI credits that never expire.
  • Fax pages pack: $6 one-time. 50 fax pages (US & Canada destinations). Never expire.
  • The Free plan is not a trial: it has no end date and needs no payment card. Downloads on the Free plan have no watermark.
  • New accounts start on the Free plan. There is no automatic trial at sign-up.
  • Pro and Business come with a 7-day free trial when subscribing on pdfbetter.com: a payment card is required at checkout, nothing is charged during the trial, and canceling before it ends means no charge. One trial per account; accounts that already had a subscription (on the web or through the App Store) pay from the first day. A reminder email is sent before the trial ends.
  • The Free plan includes 3 edited-document downloads a month, without a watermark.
  • Signature-request emails sent from Free accounts include a short "Sent with PDFBetter" footer. Documents and downloads do not.
  • Day Pass credit: upgrade to Pro within 7 days of buying a Day Pass and its price ($6) comes off the first Pro payment.
  • Refunds: for payments made on pdfbetter.com, email support@pdfbetter.com within 14 days of the first payment for a full refund. Purchases made through Apple's App Store are refunded by Apple, not by PDFBetter.

AI features

  • Answers and summaries cite page numbers; quoted passages are checked against the document text before they are shown.

  • Document text is processed by OpenAI's API, which does not use API inputs to train models by default. Page images for scan restoration are processed by fal.ai.
  • Accounts can turn on private AI mode: no stored text index, embeddings or chat history after a request, and no scan restoration. Model calls go to an OpenAI-compatible endpoint run by the deployment's operator when one is configured; otherwise they go to OpenAI's API with storage turned off. It is not a compliance certification.

E-signatures

  • Self-signing by typing, drawing or uploading a signature image; requesting signatures from others with signing order (sequential or parallel), reminders, expiry, decline, optional access codes, and a certificate of completion.
  • Each signature request locks the document version (SHA-256) and records consent, views, signatures and IP addresses in a hash-chained audit trail.
  • Senders can require signers to confirm a one-time code emailed to them before opening the document. Each signer's browser signs a statement binding the document hash to their entries with a key that stays on their device; PDFBetter certifies that key.
  • The completed PDF is sealed with a PAdES digital signature (PDFBetter's own certificate, not yet on Adobe's trust list), time-stamped under RFC 3161 when the time-stamping service is reachable, and embeds the signing evidence; completed signing records are kept for 7 years, even if the sender deletes the document or account.
  • Signature requests are designed to the technical requirements of an advanced electronic signature (eIDAS art. 26): a unique key per signer, held under their sole control on their device, linked to the document so any change is detectable. Signers are identified by email (plus an optional emailed code), not ID documents or SMS, and the signatures are not qualified electronic signatures (QES).

Security and data handling

  • Files are stored in Cloudflare R2 (encrypted at rest) and reached only through short-lived signed URLs; private app pages are excluded from search engines.
  • Guest drafts are deleted 1 hour after creation; files uploaded only to run a tool are deleted after 24 hours; deleted account documents are purged after 30 days.
  • Redaction rebuilds affected pages without the underlying content and verifies that no text can be extracted from redacted areas; whiteout/erase is a visual cover only.
  • PDFBetter does not currently claim SOC 2, ISO 27001 or HIPAA compliance and does not sign BAAs.
  • Website analytics: Google Analytics 4 (through Firebase) loads only after consent for visitors in the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland, and is on by default elsewhere with an opt-out under Privacy choices; Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track are treated as opt-outs. It never receives document names or contents, form values or email addresses, never runs on signing, shared-document, public-form or capture pages, and no advertising cookies are used.
