What it does

Check PDF spelling, explained

To check spelling in a PDF, run a proofreading pass over the document's text and review the flagged words one by one. PDFBetter lists each issue with its page, the original text, a suggested correction and a short reason, and applies a fix only when you accept it.

This helps when a PDF is the only copy you have — a finished brochure, a client's contract, a report exported from software without a spell checker — and you want to catch typos before sending it. It flags misspellings, repeated words (“the the”) and obvious typos such as “recieve”; it is not a style editor and does not rewrite sentences.

Suggestions come from a language model rather than a fixed dictionary, so names, product terms and industry jargon are judged in context rather than flagged blindly. The model detects the document's language automatically and works best on English and other widely used languages; review suggestions with extra care in specialised or less common languages. Page text is sent to our AI provider under API terms that exclude training on your data.

Accepted fixes are applied as original-text edits, the same mechanism as Edit PDF: the misspelled word is covered and the correction set in the closest matching font. Proofreading uses AI credits — 1 credit per page — from your monthly allowance; guests get a small number to try it.

Example

Before and after

Before

A 6-page product brochure exported from a design app, with “accomodate” on page 2, “it's” used for “its” on page 4, and “the the” in the closing paragraph.

After

Three issues listed with page numbers and reasons; all three accepted and corrected in place in the brochure's body font size. The brand name “Kloudly”, used consistently, was not flagged.

Good to know before you start

  • Only text the PDF stores as text is checked. Scanned pages, text inside images and outlined headlines are skipped unless you run OCR first.
  • Suggestions are generated by a language model and can be wrong, especially for names, technical terms and less common languages. Nothing is applied without your approval.
  • Accepted fixes use the original-text edit mechanism, so they inherit its limits: the closest standard font is used and lines do not reflow.
  • This feature is in beta: page text is sent to our AI provider for analysis, and each checked page uses 1 AI credit.
If something goes wrong
The check returned no issues on a page I know has typos.
The page may be an image. Run OCR PDF first, or check whether the text can be selected in the editor.
I ran out of AI credits partway through.
Check a smaller page range, wait for the monthly reset, or add an AI credit pack; issues already found stay in the list.

Check PDF spelling: questions people ask

Does the spell checker change my PDF automatically?

No. It only lists suggestions. A word changes only when you accept a suggestion or type your own correction.

Which languages are supported?

The language is detected from the text. English and other widely used languages work well; for specialised or less common languages, treat suggestions as hints and review them carefully.

Does it check grammar?

It catches misspellings, repeated words and obvious word-level mistakes like its/it's. It does not rewrite sentences or enforce a style guide.

How many credits does a check use?

1 AI credit per page checked. Free accounts include 20 AI credits a month and Pro includes 500.

Is my document used to train AI models?

No. Text is processed by our AI provider under API terms that exclude training on customer data.

Can I add words to a dictionary?

There is no personal dictionary. Skip suggestions for names and terms you want to keep; consistent proper nouns are usually not flagged.
