Vehicle bill of sale: questions people ask
Is a bill of sale enough to register the car?
No. You normally need the signed title as well. Some states require their own bill of sale form, and a few require notarization. Check your state motor vehicle agency.
What is the odometer certification for?
Federal law requires sellers to disclose mileage when ownership of most vehicles transfers, and odometer fraud is a federal offense. Many states record the disclosure on the title itself.
Should I remove my license plate?
In many states plates stay with the seller. Check your state's rules and cancel your insurance only after the transfer is complete.
Does as-is mean the buyer has no recourse?
As-is generally excludes implied warranties in private sales, but it does not protect a seller who lies about the vehicle's history or condition. This is not legal advice.
How should the buyer pay?
Cash or a cashier's check verified with the issuing bank are common for private sales. Do not hand over the title until funds clear.
