What it does

Bank statement converter, explained

To convert a bank statement PDF, drop it on this page. PDFBetter reads every transaction into a table of date, description, money out, money in and running balance, finds the statement's opening and closing balance, and checks that opening + money in − money out = closing. If the numbers don't add up, the row where the running balance breaks is highlighted, so you can fix it before you export to Excel, CSV, OFX or a QuickBooks or Xero import file.

The reconciliation is the point. A converter that silently drops one wrapped line or reads 1,234.56 as 1.23456 gives you a spreadsheet that looks fine and is wrong. Here the check runs on every statement and again after every edit, and each running balance printed on the statement is compared with the one the rows before it produce.

Statements are read from their text layer, the way a person reads columns: the header row (Date, Description, Withdrawals, Deposits, Balance, or Fecha, Concepto, Importe, Saldo, or Buchungstag, Verwendungszweck, Betrag) tells which column is which, headers repeated on every page are skipped, and subtotal, “balance brought forward” and “carried forward” lines are read as balances rather than transactions. Descriptions that wrap onto two or three lines are joined. Dates printed only on the first transaction of a day are carried down.

Scanned statements need text recognition (OCR) first, which the page runs for you. When a page has an unusual layout, you can ask AI to re-read just that page for 1 AI credit a page; each row it returns is kept only if its amount and date are printed on that page. For generic tables that aren't statements, use PDF to Excel or PDF to CSV instead.

How to do it

Convert bank statements to Excel, CSV or OFX in 4 steps

  1. 1Your PDF

  2. 2Convert

  3. 3The new format

  1. 1

    Add your statements

One PDF or a year of them (up to 12 at once), digital or scanned. Up to 10 MB each without an account or on the Free plan, 50 MB on Starter.

  2. 2

    Check the reconciliation

A green check means opening + money in − money out = closing and every running balance follows. Red means a row needs attention; one click jumps to it.

  3. 3

    Fix what's flagged

Edit any cell, delete or add rows, switch day/month order, or type an opening balance the statement printed in a box we missed.

  4. 4

    Export

Excel, CSV, OFX, QuickBooks CSV, Xero CSV or a QuickBooks Desktop .qbo file. Your edits are included; re-exporting another format of the same statement within 24 hours is free.

Example

Before and after

Before

A 2-page checking statement: a summary box with “Beginning balance $1,000.00” and “Ending balance $1,512.34”, a Date / Description / Withdrawals / Deposits / Balance table whose header repeats on page 2, a card purchase whose description wraps to a second line, and a “Subtotal” and “Balance carried forward” line at the foot of page 1.

After

Six transactions with ISO dates, the wrapped description joined into one cell, the subtotal and carried-forward lines left out, and a green check reading 1,000.00 + 2,518.00 − 2,005.66 = 1,512.34.

Settings & formats

What you can control

Excel (.xlsx)
Dates as real dates and amounts as numbers; one sheet per statement, an “All transactions” sheet and a reconciliation sheet.
CSV
Comma, semicolon or tab; dot or comma decimals; ISO, day/month or month/day dates; separate in/out columns or one signed amount.
OFX
Standard bank file for QuickBooks Online, Xero, Quicken, GnuCash and budgeting apps. Card statements are written as credit card accounts.
QuickBooks and Xero CSV
The column layouts their manual statement uploads expect.
QuickBooks Desktop (.qbo)
A Web Connect file written with your bank's Intuit ID, which you copy from a .qbo your bank's website gave you. QuickBooks rejects an ID it doesn't recognize.
AI re-read
Optional, per page, 1 AI credit a page (20 credits a month on Free). Rows whose values aren't on the page are dropped, never filled in.

Input

Good to know before you start

  • Statements are read from their layout, not from a list of banks. Unusual layouts (several transactions side by side, amounts printed in the description column) may need the AI re-read or manual fixes.
  • Scans need OCR, and OCR can misread characters on faint or skewed pages. The reconciliation catches most misread amounts, but not a misread date or description.
  • When nothing on a statement decides whether 03/04 is 3 April or March 4, the order is assumed from the rest of the statement (or its currency) and flagged so you can switch it.
  • Rows in a different currency from the statement's are listed but left out of the reconciliation.
  • Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first. One statement can have up to 500 pages on the Free plan.
If something goes wrong
It says the statement doesn't balance
Use “Show the first row that breaks”. Usually an amount sits in the wrong column (money in read as money out) or a row was split; fix the cell and the check reruns at once.
No transactions were found
The PDF is probably a scan; run text recognition when the page offers it. If the text is there but the layout is unusual, use the AI re-read on those pages.
All the dates are off by months
The day/month order was assumed. Switch between Day/month and Month/day above the table.

Bank statement converter: questions people ask

Which banks does it work with?

It doesn't rely on a list of banks. It reads the statement's columns and balances, so it works with most digital statements from banks, credit unions, card issuers and online banks, in English, Spanish, French, German and Japanese.

How does the reconciliation check work?

It adds money in and subtracts money out from the opening balance and compares the result with the closing balance, and it checks each running balance printed on a row against the one before it. Any difference is shown with the first row where it appears.

Can I convert several statements at once?

Yes. Drop up to 12 PDFs; each gets its own tab and check, and the Excel export puts them in one workbook with a sheet per statement and an “All transactions” sheet.

Does it handle credit card statements?

Yes. Card statements are detected from words like “minimum payment” (or you can switch the type), and the check runs the other way: previous balance + charges − payments = new balance.

Is my account number stored?

No. Only the last four digits are kept with the statement, for your reference and for the OFX file's account id.

What does it cost?

Each statement uses one conversion the first time you export it: 2 without an account, 10 a month on the Free plan, 500 on Pro. Other formats and re-exports of the same statement within 24 hours are free. Reading and checking statements is free; OCR uses OCR pages (5 without an account, 20 a month on Free) and the AI re-read uses AI credits.

Are 1.234,56 and dates like 31.01.2024 supported?

Yes. The decimal mark is worked out per statement, so 1,234.56, 1.234,56, 1 234,56 and 1'234.56 all read correctly, as do dates like 31.01.2024, 2024-01-31, 31 Jan 2024 and 2024年1月31日.
