What it does
AI PDF translator, explained
The AI PDF translator creates a translated copy of your PDF in the language you choose. The original document is never modified; the translation is a new document in your account, so you can put the two side by side.

Use it to understand a foreign-language contract, a letter from an overseas agency, product documentation or a research paper. You can translate the whole file or only the pages you need, which keeps the cost down on long documents.
Translation costs 1 AI credit per page. The page text is sent to OpenAI's API under OpenAI's API data-usage terms, which by default exclude API data from model training. Layout is approximated: translated text often runs longer or shorter than the source, so line breaks, font sizes and spacing can change.
Machine translation is not a certified translation. Agencies and courts that require a certified or sworn translation won't accept it, and important wording should be checked by a fluent reader. To get the gist without translating everything, ask for a summary in your language with the AI PDF summarizer.

Good to know before you start
- Layout is approximated; longer translated text can change line breaks, spacing and font sizes, and complex tables may shift.
- Text inside images, stamps and handwriting is not translated.
- It is not a certified translation and can mistranslate legal or technical terms.
- Fillable fields in the original are not carried into the translated document as working fields.
If something goes wrong
If something goes wrong
- Some pages came back untranslated
- Those pages are probably scanned images. Run OCR PDF on the original, then translate those pages again.
- Text overflows its box in the translation
- The target language needs more space. Adjust the text in the editor, or rely on the translation for meaning and the original for layout.
AI PDF translator: questions people ask
Does translation change my original PDF?
No. A new document is created and the original stays exactly as it was.
How much does it cost?
1 AI credit per translated page. Translate a page range to keep the cost down.
Is the translation certified?
No. It is machine translation. Use a certified translator when an authority requires one.
Can I translate a scanned document?
Yes, after OCR adds a text layer. Without it there is no text to translate.
Is my document kept private?
The page text is sent to OpenAI's API under OpenAI's API data-usage terms, which by default exclude API data from training. PDFBetter does not use your documents to train models.
Can I edit the translation?
Yes. It opens in the editor like any PDF, so you can correct wording before downloading.
