Every signer's own key; every signed PDF sealed
- In signature requests, every signer signs with their own key, and every completed PDF is digitally sealed and independently time-stamped, with the evidence built into the file. They are designed to the technical requirements of an advanced electronic signature (eIDAS art. 26): a unique key per signer, under their sole control, linked to the document so any change is detectable. Signers are identified by email (and an optional emailed code), not by ID documents or SMS; signatures are not qualified electronic signatures.
- Completed signature requests: the signed PDF and certificate of completion are sealed with a PAdES digital seal and, when the time-stamping authority is reachable, an RFC 3161 time-stamp, so any later change shows as modified in PDF readers. The seal's certificate comes from PDFBetter's own certificate authority, so Acrobat shows its identity as not verified. PDFs you sign yourself are not sealed.
- The sealed PDF embeds a signing-evidence file: signer statements, device signatures, certificates, submitted values and the hash-chained audit trail.
- Senders on every plan, including Free, can require signers to enter a 6-digit code emailed to them before they open, consent, decline or download. Codes expire after 10 minutes, work once and allow 5 tries. Access codes stay on Pro and Business.
- Signer device keys: each signer's browser creates a key that never leaves their device and signs a statement tying the document's fingerprint to what they entered. PDFBetter's certificate authority certifies the key, and its fingerprint is on the certificate of completion.
- Signers see the full ESIGN consumer disclosure before signing, with options to use paper instead or decline.
- Completed signing evidence is kept for 7 years after completion, even if the sender deletes the document or account. Records of requests that never completed are deleted with the document.
