Reference Letter (Employment or Character): questions people ask
Can a former employer get in trouble for a reference?
Truthful, good-faith references are generally protected, and many states have laws shielding employers. False or malicious statements can lead to defamation claims, which is why many companies only confirm dates and title.
Is a character reference for court different?
Courts may expect details about your relationship and awareness of the charges. Ask the person's lawyer how it should be addressed and formatted.
Should it be notarized?
Rarely. Some immigration or court uses ask for a sworn or notarized statement; otherwise a signed letter with contact details is standard.
Can I send it as a PDF?
Yes. A signed PDF is the usual format and keeps your formatting intact.
