Job Application Form: questions people ask
Why doesn't this form ask about criminal history?
Many states and cities have fair-chance or "ban-the-box" laws that bar criminal history questions on initial applications. Ask later in the process only where your local law allows it.
Can I ask for salary history?
A growing number of states and cities ban salary history questions. This form asks for desired pay instead.
Can I ask for date of birth or Social Security number?
Avoid it on the application. Age questions create discrimination risk, and SSNs are collected after hire for payroll and Form I-9 purposes.
Can applicants apply online with this form?
Yes. Publish it with the form builder to collect responses, or send the PDF for applicants to fill and sign electronically.
How long should I keep applications?
Federal rules generally require employers to keep applications for at least one year, and longer in some situations. State rules may add more.
