What it is

What Form 4562 is for

Form 4562 claims depreciation and amortization, makes the section 179 election to expense business property, and reports business use of vehicles and other listed property. The PDF on irs.gov is the tax-year 2025 edition. Its instructions set the 2025 section 179 limit at $2,500,000 (reduced once qualifying purchases exceed $4,000,000) and restore 100% bonus depreciation for qualified property acquired after January 19, 2025. The 2026 figures will be in the 2026 instructions, usually posted in December or January.

Line by line

How to fill out Form 4562

  1. 1

    Part I — section 179 (lines 1–13)

Enter the maximum amount and threshold from the instructions on lines 1 and 3, list the property you elect to expense on line 6, and apply the business income limit on line 11. Line 13 carries any disallowed amount to next year.

  2. 2

Part II — special allowance (lines 14–16)

Line 14 is bonus depreciation on qualified property other than listed property. The 2025 instructions allow 100% for qualified property acquired after January 19, 2025, or an election to take 40% (60% for certain long-production property and aircraft) instead.

  3. 3

Part III — MACRS (lines 17–20)

Line 17 covers assets placed in service in earlier years. Lines 19 and 20 list this year's assets by property class with the month placed in service, basis, recovery period, convention and method.

  4. 4

Part IV — summary (lines 21–23)

Line 22 totals the deduction to carry to your return, such as Schedule C, Schedule E or a business return. Partnerships and S corporations follow the special instructions.

  5. 5

    Part V — listed property (lines 24–41)

Report vehicles and other listed property, the business-use percentage and, in Section B, the miles driven. Answer the evidence questions on line 24a and 24b.

  6. 6

Part VI — amortization (lines 42–44)

List costs whose amortization starts this year on line 42 and add amortization of costs that started earlier on line 43.

Common Form 4562 mistakes

  • Using one Form 4562 for several businesses instead of a separate form for each business or activity.
  • Claiming a section 179 deduction larger than business income; the excess must carry over on line 13.
  • Applying last year's bonus percentage without checking the property's acquisition date against January 19, 2025.
  • Skipping Part V for a vehicle, which is required for listed property regardless of when it was placed in service.
  • Not keeping mileage records to support the business-use percentage on line 24a.

Where to send it

Attach Form 4562 to the return it supports. File a separate Form 4562 for each business or activity on your return. For individuals that's the 2026 Form 1040, due April 15, 2027 (paper addresses: https://www.irs.gov/filing/where-to-file-paper-tax-returns-with-or-without-a-payment); calendar-year partnerships and S corporations attach it to returns due March 15, 2027. A paper individual return needs a handwritten signature.

Filing rules change. Confirm the address or portal on irs.gov before you send.

Form 4562: questions people ask

Which year is this Form 4562 for?

The PDF on irs.gov today is for tax years beginning in 2025. For 2026, use the 2026 form and instructions once posted, usually in December or January; the section 179 limits change each year.

What is the 2025 section 179 limit?

The 2025 instructions say $2,500,000, reduced by the amount by which section 179 property placed in service during the year costs more than $4,000,000. The limit for SUVs placed in service in tax years beginning in 2025 is $31,300.

Is bonus depreciation 100% again?

For qualified property acquired and placed in service after January 19, 2025, the 2025 instructions say P.L. 119-21 reinstated the 100% special allowance. Qualified property acquired earlier and placed in service in 2025 is limited to 40% (60% for long-production property and certain aircraft).

Do I need Form 4562 every year?

Not always. The instructions list when you must file it, such as for assets placed in service this year, a section 179 deduction, any vehicle or listed property, or amortization that begins this year.

Can I keep my asset list in a spreadsheet?

Yes. Many people track assets in a spreadsheet and copy the totals into the form; export a PDF table to Excel to start one.
