What it does
Edit Word document, explained
To edit a Word document online without Microsoft Word, PDFBetter converts the .docx or .doc to PDF on our servers and opens that PDF in the editor, where you can change text, fill blanks, add signatures and annotate. It does not edit the DOCX file in place.

This works well when the Word file is really a finished document you need to complete: a contract to sign, an application to fill, a letter to correct and send as a PDF, a template someone emailed you. The converted PDF keeps the page layout, fonts and images as Word would print them, and you get every PDF tool from there.
It is not a word processor. Paragraphs do not reflow when you edit, track changes and Word comments are not kept, and styles, fields and tables of contents become fixed page content. If you need a DOCX back, PDF to Word converts the edited PDF, but that round trip rebuilds the document's structure from the layout and is not identical to the original file. For heavy rewriting, a word processor is still the better tool.
Conversion uses one of your monthly Office conversions (guests get a couple to try). Downloading the edited PDF uses a free account's edited-document allowance.

Example
Before and after
A 3-page independent contractor agreement sent as a .docx, with blanks for the contractor's name, rate and start date and a signature line.
The agreement converted to a PDF that matches Word's layout, blanks filled with Add text, the date added in MM/DD/YYYY and a drawn signature on the line, downloaded as a PDF ready to email back.

Good to know before you start
- The Word file is converted to PDF; the original DOCX structure (styles, track changes, comments, fields, table of contents) is not kept in the editor.
- Fonts that are not available on our converter are substituted, which can shift line breaks; check the converted pages before editing.
- Converting back to Word with PDF to Word does not restore the original file exactly; expect to tidy formatting.
- This tool is in beta and uses the Office conversion allowance on your plan.
If something goes wrong
If something goes wrong
- Text runs onto an extra page after conversion.
- A font in the document was substituted. Embed fonts when saving in Word, or export to PDF from Word yourself and use Edit PDF instead.
- The conversion failed.
- Password-protected or corrupted Word files cannot be converted. Remove the password in Word and try again.
Edit Word document: questions people ask
Do I edit the actual Word file?
No. The Word file is converted to a PDF and you edit the PDF. The original .docx on your device is unchanged.
Can I get a Word file back after editing?
Yes, by converting the edited PDF with PDF to Word. The result is a new DOCX rebuilt from the layout, not the original file with your edits.
Are track changes and Word comments kept?
No. The conversion produces the document as it would print; tracked changes and Word comments are not carried into the PDF.
Is my Word file sent to a server?
Yes. Conversion runs on PDFBetter's document processor, and the file is stored with your draft under our retention rules.
Does it work with Google Docs?
Download the Google Doc as .docx (File → Download → Microsoft Word), then upload it here.
Which is better for signing a Word contract — this or Sign PDF?
Use this to get the Word contract into PDF form; signing then happens in the same editor with the same signature tools.
