What it does
Word to PDF, explained
Word to PDF converts a DOCX, DOC, ODT or RTF document into a PDF. Page size, margins, headers and footers, page numbers, tables, images and hyperlinks are kept, and the result looks the same on every phone, computer and printer, which is the point of sending a PDF instead of a Word file.

We convert with LibreOffice on our processing servers. The biggest source of difference from what you see in Word is fonts: if your document uses a font we do not have, a substitute with similar letter widths is used, and line or page breaks can move. Fonts embedded in the DOCX (Word's “Embed fonts in the file” option) are used when their license allows it.
Your source file is not changed; you get a new PDF. Before converting, accept or reject tracked changes and update the table of contents in Word, because the PDF shows the document as it was last saved.
Without an account you can run 2 conversions; the Free plan includes 10 a month, Pro 500. Need to edit a Word file and keep working in PDF? Edit Word converts it and opens it in the PDF editor.

Good to know before you start
- Fonts we do not have are replaced with similar ones, which can shift line and page breaks. Embedded fonts help when their license allows embedding.
- Tracked changes may appear as markup if the document was saved showing them, and comments are not included.
- Fields such as the table of contents and cross-references show their last saved values; they are not updated during conversion.
- Files that need a password to open, and documents with macros, are not converted; macros never run.
If something goes wrong
If something goes wrong
- A page break moved and a heading is stranded at the bottom of a page
- A font was substituted. Embed fonts in Word (File > Options > Save) and convert again, or use a common font such as Arial or Times New Roman.
- Red and blue markup appears in the PDF
- The document still has tracked changes. Accept or reject them in Word, save, and convert again.
- The conversion fails
- The file may be password-protected or damaged. Remove the open password in Word, or re-save the file as DOCX.
Word to PDF: questions people ask
Will the PDF look exactly like my Word document?
Usually very close. Differences come almost entirely from fonts we do not have; using common or embedded fonts gives the closest match.
Are hyperlinks and the table of contents clickable?
Yes. Web links and internal links, including table-of-contents entries, stay clickable in the PDF.
Can I convert DOC files from older Word versions?
Yes. DOC (Word 97–2003), DOCX, ODT and RTF are supported.
Are comments included?
No. Comments are left out of the PDF. Delete or resolve them anyway if the PDF goes to someone outside your team.
Do I need an account?
You can run 2 conversions without an account. The Free plan includes 10 conversions a month.
Is my document stored?
It is uploaded for conversion. Files from sessions without an account are deleted after 24 hours; signed-in users can delete documents at any time.
