Photography invoice: questions people ask
Who owns the copyright to the photos?
In the US the photographer usually keeps copyright unless a written agreement transfers it. The client receives a license to use the images, which this invoice describes. This is not legal advice.
Are prints taxed differently from session fees?
Often yes. Many states tax physical prints and albums but treat session fees differently. Check your state's rules; this is not tax advice.
Is the retainer refundable?
That depends on your contract. Many photographers make booking retainers non-refundable because the date is reserved; state it in your contract and reference it here.
Should I invoice before or after the event?
Many photographers invoice the balance a few weeks before the event and deliver the gallery after it is paid. Set the due date to match your contract.
