Certificate of insurance request: questions people ask
Is a certificate of insurance proof of coverage?
A certificate summarizes coverage on its issue date but does not change the policy. Being named additional insured requires an endorsement on the policy itself; ask for a copy of the endorsement for important contracts.
What limits should I ask for?
Use the limits in your contract or your insurer's requirements. Your own insurance agent can advise what is appropriate for the work.
Who issues the certificate?
The vendor's insurance agent or broker, usually on a standard industry form. The vendor cannot issue it themselves.
What should I check when it arrives?
Insured name, policy dates, coverage types and limits, the certificate holder, and the additional insured box if you required it.
