Cash flow statement
For small business owners who need to explain where cash came from and where it went over a period, often alongside a profit and loss statement and balance sheet for a lender or investor. It starts from net income, adjusts for non-cash items and working capital, then adds investing and financing activity.

- 4
Fill financing activities
Enter loan proceeds and owner contributions as positive, and loan repayments and owner draws as negative.

Cash flow statement: questions people ask
Why is an increase in receivables negative?
Sales you recorded but have not been paid for are in net income but not in your bank account, so they reduce cash compared with profit.
Why doesn't ending cash match my bank balance?
Check that every loan payment, owner draw and equipment purchase is included, and that working capital changes have the right sign.
What is the indirect method?
It starts from net income and adjusts to cash. It is the most common format for small businesses because it uses figures you already have.
Is this the same as a cash flow forecast?
No. This statement looks back at a period that has ended. A forecast projects future cash.
