How to edit a scanned PDF

Short answer

A scanned PDF has no editable text, only an image of the page, so you first run OCR (optical character recognition) to detect the words. After OCR you can search, copy and change recognized lines in a PDF editor, where your correction is drawn over the scan image. For heavy changes, convert the OCR'd file to Word and retype there.

How to tell whether your PDF is a scan

Try to select a single word with your cursor, or press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac) and search for a word you can see. If nothing selects or the search finds nothing, the page is an image. Files from scanners, phone scanning apps and fax services are almost always images.

Some scans already have an OCR layer added by the scanner. In that case text selects, but the hidden text may contain recognition errors that only show when you copy or search.

What Edit scanned PDF does, in three steps.

Edit a scan in PDFBetter

  1. 1

Clean up the scan if needed

If pages are crooked, faint or speckled, run Restore scanned PDF first. Straight, high-contrast pages are recognized more accurately.

  2. 2

    Upload to Edit scanned PDF

PDF, JPG, PNG and TIFF are accepted. Images are placed on PDF pages before recognition.

  3. 3

Pick every language on the page

A wrong language setting is the most common cause of misread accents and characters.

  4. 4

    Run OCR, then edit

The document opens in the editor with recognized lines editable. Click a line to change it, or add text, dates and checkmarks.

  5. 5

    Download

Downloading the edited file needs a free account. OCR pages count toward your monthly OCR allowance.

What “editing” a scan really changes

The page stays an image. When you change a recognized line, the editor paints over those pixels and places your new text on top in a standard font chosen to resemble the original. On clean white paper this is hard to notice. On yellowed, tinted or textured paper the patch can show.

The old words are still in the image underneath your overlay. That is fine for correcting a typo on a copy, but not for removing information. If the original content must be gone, use redaction, which rebuilds the page without it.

Check and correct the recognized text

OCR is good on clean printed text and weak on handwriting, stamps, stylized fonts and low-resolution scans. After recognition, search for a few words you can see on the page, especially names and numbers. Recognition errors are easy to miss because the page still looks right; only the hidden text is wrong.

For hard scans such as dense tables or handwriting, AI OCR adds a vision-model pass that corrects many recognition mistakes. It uses AI credits, so try standard OCR first.

When to retype instead

If you need to change more than a few lines, it is usually faster to convert the scan to Word with OCR turned on and edit the document there. The layout is rebuilt from the recognized text, so expect to fix line breaks and table structure before saving a new PDF.

Questions people ask

Can I edit handwriting in a scanned PDF?

Not reliably. OCR recognizes printed text far better than handwriting. You can still cover handwritten content and add typed text on top, or redact it if it must be removed.

Will OCR change how my scan looks?

No. OCR adds an invisible text layer behind the page image. The visible page is unchanged until you edit a line.

Why is my edited line a slightly different color from the page?

The cover behind your new text is a solid color. On paper that isn't pure white, pick a cover color that matches the background, or accept a small visible patch.

Do I need an account to edit a scanned PDF?

You can run OCR on a few pages and edit without an account. Downloading the edited file needs a free account.

Is a scanned PDF with edits still a valid copy of the original?

It's a modified copy. If the scan is evidence of an original document, such as a signed contract, keep the unedited scan and don't present an edited copy as the original.
