How to split a PDF into single pages
By the PDFBetter teamPublished 6 min read
Short answer
To split a PDF into single pages, open it in a PDF splitter, choose the one-file-per-page mode and download the pages as separate PDFs or as one ZIP. Each file is named with its page number, so a 12-page scan becomes 12 one-page PDFs in order. In PDFBetter this runs in your browser, free and without an account.

When do you need one file per page?
Splitting into single pages, sometimes called bursting, is the right move when each page is really a separate document that happens to share a file:
- A stack of receipts scanned in one pass. Expense apps usually want one receipt per upload.
- One-page forms from a group: permission slips, sign-in sheets, or W-9s collected from a team and scanned together.
- Portals that ask for each document separately, such as an ID upload, a proof-of-address upload and a pay-stub upload.
- Slides or handouts where each page goes to a different person or folder.
If your documents are longer than one page, single pages are the wrong cut. Ten 3-page onboarding packets want “every 3 pages”, and our general guide to splitting a PDF covers custom ranges and fixed-size chunks.
Single pages also make sense when different people need different pages. A teacher returning scanned worksheets, a manager sending each team member their own signed review page, or an office returning one-page receipts to the staff who submitted them can all burst the scan and hand out files, instead of sending everyone the whole stack and asking them to scroll to their page.
How do you split every page into its own PDF?
- 1
Open Split PDF and add the file
Choose one PDF. If it asks for a password when you open it, unlock it first with Unlock PDF.
- 2
Choose “Each page”
This mode makes one single-page PDF for every page in the file.
- 3
Review the list
Every output appears with its page number and a thumbnail, so you can see that page 7 really is the receipt you expect.
- 4
Rename what matters
Outputs are named after the original with the page number added. Rename any you'll need to find later, for example receipt_2026-10-03_taxi.pdf.
- 5
Download
Download all pages at once as a ZIP, or one at a time.
What does splitting a receipt scan look like?
Take a common case: after a work trip you feed 18 paper receipts through an office scanner, and it hands you one 18-page PDF. Your expense app wants one receipt per entry.
- Open the scan in Split PDF and flip through the thumbnails. Two receipts were long and the scanner put each on two pages, so you have 20 pages, not 18.
- Rather than bursting everything, use custom ranges so the long receipts stay whole: one range per receipt, with single numbers for one-page receipts and 4-5 and 11-12 for the two long ones. Each range becomes one file.
- If every receipt fits on a single page, skip the ranges and choose “Each page”.
- Rename the outputs with date and vendor while you're looking at the thumbnails, so the files sort by date on your disk.
- Download the ZIP and attach each file to its expense entry.
The same pattern works for any stack of short documents: one-page forms get “Each page”, documents of a fixed length get “every N pages”, and mixed lengths get custom ranges.
How should you name single-page files?
By default, outputs carry the original file name plus the page, so scan.pdf becomes a set of files with the page number appended. That keeps them in order, but page numbers mean nothing a month later. Rename while the thumbnails are in front of you, using a pattern that sorts well:
- Date first for receipts and statements: 2026-10-03_taxi.pdf sorts chronologically in any folder.
- Person first for forms from a group: lee_permission-slip.pdf, ortiz_permission-slip.pdf.
- Number first for slides or handouts: 01_agenda.pdf, 02_budget.pdf.
Avoid slashes and colons in names; some systems reject them when you upload.
What if you only want some pages as single files?
You don't have to burst the whole document. Two routes work:
- Pick the pages first. In Extract pages, select pages 2, 5 and 9, then switch on “each page as a separate file”. You get three single-page PDFs and nothing else.
- Clean up, then split. If the stack has a cover sheet and a few blank pages, delete them with Remove pages and split what's left, so you don't download files you'll throw away.
How do you split a two-sided scan?
Duplex scans are where single-page splitting goes wrong, because each sheet produced two pages. Decide what one “document” is before you split:
| Your scan | Do this |
|---|---|
| One-sided originals scanned duplex (every back is blank) | Remove the even pages first, then split each page |
| Two-sided one-sheet forms (front and back belong together) | Split “every 2 pages” instead of each page |
| Fronts and backs you want as two separate files | Use ranges “odd” and “even” to get one file of fronts and one of backs |
Why won't the ZIP open, and other common snags
- The ZIP won't open on a phone. Some mobile browsers save ZIPs without offering to unzip them. Open the ZIP from the phone's Files app, or download the pages one by one.
- A single page is still large. Splitting copies pages as they are and doesn't recompress images, so one page of a high-resolution scan can still be several megabytes. Run it through Compress PDF if a portal rejects it.
- Links and bookmarks stop working. A link on page 1 that pointed to page 9 has no target once those pages live in different files.
- Page numbers don't match the printed ones. Split uses each page's position in the file. A document with an unnumbered cover will look one off.
Your original stays as it was
Splitting works on a copy inside your browser. The PDF you started with is unchanged, so you can always go back and split it a different way.
Can you split a PDF into single pages on a phone?
Yes. Split PDF works in a phone's browser, and the work happens on the phone itself, so a long scan of large images takes longer than on a laptop. For a stack of receipts or forms it's quick. Download the pages one by one if your browser saves the ZIP without offering to open it, or open the ZIP from the Files app. Renaming on a small screen is fiddly, so for big batches consider splitting on a computer, where you can rename outputs faster before downloading.
Split, extract or remove: which one do you want?
| Tool | Result | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Split PDF | Several files that together cover your pages | A 12-receipt scan becomes 12 PDFs |
| Extract pages | One new file with only the pages you pick | Pages 1, 21 and 41 of a statement bundle |
| Remove pages | One shorter file without the pages you pick | A scan minus its blank backs |
All three run in your browser: the PDF isn't uploaded and the download is free without an account.

Questions people ask
Is there a maximum number of pages I can split?
Documents up to a page limit that rises with a free account and again on paid plans. Very long, image-heavy files also depend on your device's memory.
Does splitting reduce quality?
No. Each page is copied as it is, with no re-rendering or recompression.
Do form fields still work in the single-page files?
Yes. A fillable field stays fillable in the file that contains its page.
Can it split automatically where each new invoice starts?
No. Split doesn't read content to find document boundaries. Use “each page” for one-page documents or a fixed page count for documents of equal length.
Do I need an account to download the pages?
No. Split runs in your browser, so the files download free without an account.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?
Unlock it first with Unlock PDF, using its password, then split the unlocked copy.
Are the single pages smaller files?
Each one holds only its page, but pages are copied without recompression. Run Compress PDF on any page that's still too large for an upload.
