How to turn a PDF into an audio brief
Reviewed

Short answer
To turn a PDF into audio, decide whether you need every word or the gist. For every word, use your device's or browser's read-aloud feature on the PDF. For the gist, generate an audio brief: PDFBetter's PDF to audio writes a cited summary of up to five PDFs and reads it aloud in two to four minutes with a synthetic voice, giving you an MP3 and a transcript that links each part to its page. An audio brief costs 6 AI credits.

Make an audio brief step by step
- 1
Open PDF to audio
Upload one to five PDFs and sign in with a free account. “Audio brief” is preselected.
- 2
Add a focus (optional)
For example “what changes for employees” or “chapter 4 only”, so the few minutes go where you need them.
- 3
Generate
Writing and recording takes up to a minute. If speech can't be produced, you still get the transcript and pay only for the written brief.
- 4
Listen with the transcript
Each part of the transcript lists its sources; open them to check a number or quote before you rely on it.
- 5
Download the MP3
Take it on your commute; the transcript stays in your workspace.

What to expect
The script is at most about 500 words, so a long report is condensed heavily. It is read by one synthetic voice — not a narrator and not a two-host podcast — and names, numbers and abbreviations can sound odd. The script says nothing that isn't in the cited brief it was written from.
Scanned PDFs need OCR first, and text in charts and images isn't read. Document text is sent to OpenAI's API, whose API data-usage terms by default exclude API data from model training.
