What it does

PDF to audio brief, explained

PDF to audio turns documents into a short spoken summary. It first writes a cited brief from your PDFs, then turns it into a script of at most about 500 words (two to four minutes) and reads it aloud with one synthetic voice from OpenAI's text-to-speech API. You get an MP3 and a transcript in which each part lists the document, version and page it came from. An audio brief costs 6 AI credits.

It is a podcast-style summary, not an audiobook: it does not read the whole document aloud word for word, and there is one narrator, not a conversation between hosts. The script is told to say nothing that isn't in the cited brief.

Use it to go over a long report on a commute, catch up on a policy before a meeting, or give someone who prefers listening an overview they can still check. For a written report use PDF to brief; to test what you remember, use PDF to quiz.

The text is processed by OpenAI's API under OpenAI's API data-usage terms, which by default exclude API data from training. If speech can't be produced, you keep the transcript and the brief and are charged only for the brief (4 AI credits).

Good to know before you start

  • It's a short summary, not a full read-aloud. Most of a long document is left out by design.
  • The voice is synthetic, not a human narrator; names, numbers and abbreviations can be pronounced oddly.
  • There is one voice. It doesn't produce a two-host conversation.
  • Scanned PDFs need OCR first; text in images and charts isn't read.
  • The audio can't be edited. To change the content, generate again with a different focus.
If something goes wrong
I got a transcript but no audio
Speech synthesis failed or isn't switched on. The transcript and brief are saved, the audio wasn't charged, and you can try again later.
The audio skips the part I care about
Add a focus naming that topic, or generate from only the document that covers it.

PDF to audio brief: questions people ask

Does it read the whole PDF aloud?

No. It speaks a two-to-four-minute summary of what the documents say. It is meant for getting the gist, not for listening to every page.

Is it like a podcast?

It's a short spoken briefing in a podcast-like format, read by one synthetic voice. There are no hosts or conversation.

Is the narration a real person?

No. It's synthetic speech from OpenAI's text-to-speech API. The transcript shows exactly what is said.

How do I know the audio is accurate?

Each part of the transcript lists the citations behind it — document, version, page and a verified quote. Check anything you'll act on.

How much does it cost?

6 AI credits per audio brief. If no audio is produced you're charged only for the written brief (4 AI credits). The Free plan includes 20 AI credits a month and Pro includes 500.

Can I download the audio?

Yes, as an MP3. The transcript stays with it in your workspace.

Is my document used to train AI?

The text is processed by OpenAI's API under OpenAI's API data-usage terms, which by default exclude API data from training. PDFBetter does not train models on your documents.
