What it does

PDF reader, explained

To read a PDF online, open it in a browser-based viewer that renders each page and gives you navigation: thumbnails, page jump, zoom, fit to width and search. PDFBetter's reader opens in a distraction-free mode with the editing toolbar tucked away until you need it.

It is useful when you are on a shared or locked-down computer with no PDF app, on a Chromebook, or when the built-in browser viewer struggles with a large or complex file. Pages render as you scroll, so a 300-page manual opens quickly and stays responsive; thumbnails let you jump to a chapter instead of scrolling.

Search finds exact words and shows every match with its page; scanned documents need OCR before their words can be searched. Zoom keeps text sharp at any level because pages are re-rendered rather than enlarged as images.

Reading is free without an account. When you want to do something with the file — highlight, comment, sign, fill — the tools are one click away in the same window, and only downloading an edited copy needs a free account.

Good to know before you start

  • The file is uploaded to PDFBetter to open in the reader; guest drafts are deleted after 1 hour. For a fully offline reader, use a desktop PDF app.
  • Password-protected PDFs need the password to open; unlock them first.
  • Search works on the text layer only; scanned pages need OCR before words can be found.
  • Guest files are limited to 25 MB and 200 pages; larger documents need an account.

PDF reader: questions people ask

Do I need to install anything?

No. The reader runs in any current browser on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS and Android.

Can it open very large PDFs?

Pages render as you scroll, so long documents stay responsive. File limits are 25 MB and 200 pages as a guest, 50 MB and 500 pages on a free account, and more on paid plans.

Why can't I search my PDF?

It is probably a scan with no text layer. Run OCR PDF to make it searchable.

Does the reader keep my place?

With an account, documents are saved to your list so you can reopen them; guest drafts are deleted 1 hour after they're created.

Can I print from the reader?

Yes. Use Print PDF from the same window for page range and scaling options.

Is reading free?

Yes. Opening and reading a PDF does not need an account or count toward any allowance.
