What it does
Flatten PDF, explained
Flattening a PDF merges its interactive layers — form fields and their values, comments, highlights, stamps and drawn markups — into the page content, so the result is a plain PDF that displays identically in every reader and cannot be changed by clicking into a field. PDFBetter flattens in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.

Flatten when a document is final: a completed application before you submit it, a signed form before archiving it, a reviewed contract whose markup should be printed exactly as shown. It also fixes a common annoyance — filled values or annotations that some viewers, printers or upload portals hide or display differently.
Flattening is not security. The text stays selectable and copyable, and anyone with a PDF editor can still edit the page content. To restrict editing, use Protect PDF; to permanently remove information, use Redact PDF. Covering something with a field value or annotation and then flattening does not delete what is underneath.
Flatten affects everything at once. To flatten only some fields, or remove fields while discarding their values, use Remove PDF fields instead.

Example
Before and after
A completed 3-page fillable insurance claim form with 40 filled fields, a few sticky notes and highlights, rejected by the insurer's upload portal because the answers appeared blank.
One flattened PDF with every answer, note and highlight drawn into the pages; no fields remain, and the portal displays the answers.

Good to know before you start
- Flattening cannot be undone in the output file; keep the original if you may need the fields again.
- It is not redaction or protection: text remains selectable, and covered content may still be in the file.
- Flattening a PDF that carries certificate-based digital signatures invalidates those signatures.
- Dynamic XFA forms are not standard fields and are not flattened; print them to PDF first.
Flatten PDF: questions people ask
What does flattening a PDF do?
It draws form field values and annotations into the page itself, removing the interactive layer, so the PDF looks the same everywhere and cannot be edited by clicking.
Is a flattened PDF secure?
No. Flattening prevents casual changes to fields, but the text can still be copied and edited with a PDF editor. Use Protect PDF or Redact PDF for security.
Can I flatten only some fields?
Not here; this flattens everything. Use Remove PDF fields with Keep values as text on just the fields you choose.
Can I unflatten a PDF?
No. Values become ordinary page content. Keep your fillable original if you might need to edit it.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Flattening happens in your browser and the file stays on your device.
Will flattening make the file smaller?
Usually it changes size only slightly. Use Compress PDF if file size is the goal.
