What you give up when you leave Acrobat
What you give up when you leave Acrobat
Acrobat Pro's distinctive features are its print-production preflight, PDF/X, PDF/A and PDF/E output, accessibility checking and Adobe Admin Console licensing. If your work depends on them, choose an alternative that has them — Foxit and Nitro cover several — or keep Acrobat for the people who need it and give everyone else something lighter.
Most everyday tasks — editing text, combining files, filling and signing, OCR, conversion — are widely available for less. Acrobat Standard is $14.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly and Pro is $19.99, with higher month-to-month prices.
PDFBetter: browser-based, with signing and forms included
PDFBetter: browser-based, with signing and forms included
PDFBetter edits text, converts Office files, runs OCR, redacts by removing the underlying content, and includes signature requests and form publishing on every account plan. Pro is $15 a month or $10 billed yearly with no annual commitment required, and a $6 Day Pass covers one-off jobs. It also adds Bates numbers and headers and footers, strips hidden data with Sanitize PDF, and converts to PDF/A-2b or PDF/A-3b, checked by its own tests rather than an independent validator. It runs in any browser and as a free Mac and Windows app, but it has no preflight, PDF/X or PDF/A validation tools.

Foxit PDF Editor is $129.99 a year, or $10.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly, and Editor 14 is available as a $209.99 perpetual license. It includes PDF/A and PDF/X, preflight, accessibility validation and Bates numbering. E-signatures come with Editor+ (150 envelopes a year) or a separate eSign plan.
Nitro PDF: for company rollouts
Nitro PDF: for company rollouts
Nitro PDF Standard is $15 per user a month billed annually and includes AI summaries and Q&A, PDF/A tools and an admin portal for licenses. Nitro Sign is a separate subscription from $10 per user a month. All Nitro subscriptions are billed annually, so it fits organizations more than individuals.
PDFelement: a low-cost perpetual license

Wondershare PDFelement sells quarterly, yearly and perpetual licenses for Windows and Mac — for example $139.99 for a cross-platform perpetual license — with full editing, batch conversion, OCR and redaction. It suits people who want to pay once for offline editing. Its trial watermarks output and AI is sold as an add-on.

Smallpdf and Sejda: lighter online tools
For occasional tasks, Smallpdf Pro ($12 a month, or $9 billed annually) and Sejda (free for 3 tasks an hour, or a $5 Web Week Pass) cover conversion, compression, editing and signing without installing anything. Neither offers Acrobat's professional output tools.
