What it does
Remove PDF watermark, explained
Remove watermark deletes watermarks that a PDF program stored as their own objects: watermark annotations and content tagged as a watermark. Those can be taken out cleanly, leaving the page content beneath exactly as it was.

Many watermarks are not stored that way. A DRAFT stamp that was flattened into the page, printed and rescanned, or drawn as ordinary text, is part of the page content and can't be separated from it. PDFBetter does not paint over or retouch those marks, and the tool tells you when nothing removable was found.
Typical uses: removing your own DRAFT marking from a final version, or clearing a review stamp from a document you control. Only remove watermarks from documents you have the right to modify. To add one, use Add watermark; to cover a flattened mark visually, Erase is available, with the usual caveat that covered content is still in the file.
How to do it
Remove a watermark from a PDF in 3 steps
1A watermarked PDF
2Find the mark
3A clean copy
- 1
Upload the PDF
Unlock password-protected files first.
- 2
Review what was found
PDFBetter reports whether it found removable watermark objects. If none were found, the mark is part of the page content and stays.
- 3
Remove and download
Download a copy without the detected watermarks. Your original upload is unchanged.
Example
Before and after
A final contract exported from a PDF program with a “DRAFT” watermark annotation on all 8 pages.
The same 8 pages with the watermark annotations deleted and the contract text untouched.

Good to know before you start
- Watermarks flattened into page content, embedded in scanned images, or drawn as ordinary text are not removed.
- Detection relies on how the watermark was tagged; a mark saved as a generic stamp or shape may not be recognized as a watermark.
- Each run uses one Office & advanced conversion from the monthly allowance.
If something goes wrong
If something goes wrong
- It says no watermark was found, but I can see one
- The mark is part of the page content, not a separate object. It can't be removed cleanly. If you created the document, export it again from the source without the watermark.
- Part of the watermark is still there
- The file may contain both a watermark object and a copy flattened into the content. Only the object could be removed.
Remove PDF watermark: questions people ask
Can you remove any watermark?
No. Only watermarks stored as watermark objects or annotations. Marks that are part of the page itself can't be separated from the content, and we don't claim otherwise.
Will removing the watermark change the rest of the page?
No. Only the detected watermark objects are deleted; text, images and fields stay as they were.
Can I remove a watermark from a scanned PDF?
Usually not. In a scan the watermark is pixels in the same image as the text.
Can I remove a watermark I added with PDFBetter?
Keep your original file and use that. Watermarks added by Add watermark are drawn into the page content, so they are not reliably removable.
Is it allowed to remove a watermark?
It depends on who owns the document and why the mark is there. Remove watermarks only from documents you are authorized to modify.
