What it does
Measure PDF, explained
To measure on a PDF, open it with the measure tool, choose Distance, Perimeter or Area, and click the points on the drawing; the value appears on the page as you go. Distance is a dimension line between two points, Perimeter adds up a path of several segments, and Area closes the points into a polygon and reports its surface in square units.

Measurements are only as good as the scale. Type the scale printed in the title block (1/4 in = 1 ft, 1 in = 20 ft, 1:50, 1:100) or calibrate: draw over a dimension you know, such as a door opening or a dimensioned wall, and enter its real length. PDFBetter works out the scale from that line, and every new measurement on the document uses it.
Typical uses are take-offs and quick checks: the floor area of a room on a plan, the length of fence on a site plan, the run of a cable tray, or whether furniture fits a drawn space. Each measurement stays editable: drag its corners, change the unit or the number of decimals, add a caption like “Kitchen”, or delete it.
Measurements download as part of the PDF, drawn as lines and labels that look the same in every viewer, and they appear in the Review panel and in Export comments with their values.
How to do it
Measure distances and areas on a PDF in 4 steps
1Your PDF
2Click and change
3The edited PDF
- 1
Upload the drawing
The measure tool is active when the editor opens.
- 2
Set the scale
Type the scale from the title block, pick a common one, or choose Calibrate and draw over a known dimension.
- 3
Measure
Drag or click two points for a distance. For perimeter or area, click each corner, then double-click or press Enter.
- 4
Adjust and download
Drag corners to refine, switch units or decimals, add captions, then download the PDF or export the list of measurements.
Example
Before and after
A one-page floor plan PDF from an architect, printed scale 1/4 in = 1 ft, with no room areas written on it.
The scale set from the title block and checked against a 3 ft door opening, then three area measurements labelled “Living: 312.5 ft²”, “Kitchen: 118.0 ft²” and “Bed 1: 143.8 ft²”, plus a 46.2 ft perimeter for new baseboard.
Settings & formats
What you can control
- Distance, perimeter, area
- A straight dimension line, an open path of segments, or a closed polygon with its area.
- Scale
- Typed (1 in = 10 ft, 1:100), picked from common architectural and metric scales, or calibrated on a known length. Default is actual size: 1 pt = 1/72 in.
- Units and decimals
- Inches, feet, millimetres, centimetres or metres (square units for areas), 0 to 4 decimals, in your language's number format.
- Captions
- A short name before the value, such as “Wall A: 4.20 m”.

Good to know before you start
- Accuracy depends on the scale the drawing declares and on how it was produced: drawings that were scanned, faxed or printed “fit to page” are often not at their stated scale. Calibrate on the longest dimension you know.
- Scale and measurement information embedded in a PDF by CAD software (viewport and measure dictionaries) is not read. Set or calibrate the scale yourself.
- Points are placed by eye; they do not snap to the lines in the drawing. Zoom in for precise placement.
- Areas are polygons with straight sides: curved edges must be approximated with extra corners, and outlines that cross themselves give a wrong area.
- Measurements are saved into the PDF as drawn lines and labels, not as PDF measurement annotations, so other apps cannot recalculate them.
Measure PDF: questions people ask
How do I set the scale of a PDF drawing?
Type the scale printed on the drawing, such as 1/4 in = 1 ft or 1:100, or pick a common one. If you are unsure, choose Calibrate and draw over a dimension you know; PDFBetter calculates the scale from it.
What scale is used if I don't set one?
Actual size on paper: one PDF point is 1/72 of an inch, so you measure the printed page itself.
Can I measure an area in square feet or square metres?
Yes. Choose Area, click each corner of the space and finish with a double-click or Enter. The label shows the area in the square of the unit you pick.
Can I change a measurement after drawing it?
Yes. Select it to drag its corners, change the unit, decimals, color or scale, add a caption, or delete it. The value updates as you edit.
Does it read the scale stored in CAD-exported PDFs?
No. Embedded viewport and measure dictionaries are not read yet, so set the scale from the title block or calibrate on a known dimension.
Do measurements work on rotated pages?
Yes. Points are stored in page coordinates, so a measurement gives the same value whether the page is shown upright or rotated, and labels stay readable.
Can I get a list of all measurements?
Yes. Use Export comments to get every measurement with its value and scale as a summary PDF, a CSV for spreadsheets, or JSON.
