How to turn a PDF into a presentation

Short answer

There are two ways to turn a PDF into a presentation. To reuse the pages as they look, convert the PDF to PowerPoint, which makes one slide per page. To present what the document says, generate a slide outline: PDFBetter's PDF to presentation writes 6–12 slides with short bullets that cite their source pages and speaker notes, for 4 AI credits, and you paste it into your own slide template.

Choose the right approach

Converting (PDF to PowerPoint) keeps layout, images and charts and gives you a PPTX, but a 40-page report becomes 40 dense slides. Outlining (PDF to presentation) writes a new, short talk about the content, but it is text only: no design, images or charts, and no .pptx file.

Many people use both: an outline for the story, and converted pages as a source for the charts they want to show.

What PDF to presentation does, in three steps.

Make an outline step by step

  1. 1

    Open PDF to presentation

Upload one to five PDFs and sign in with a free account. “Slide outline” is preselected.

  2. 2

    Add a focus

Name the audience or angle, such as “for the board: risks and next steps”. Without one, the outline covers the documents evenly.

  3. 3

    Generate

The first slide is an overview; each slide has a title, two to five bullets with their sources, and speaker notes.

  4. 4

    Fix flagged bullets

A bullet marked as having no verified source couldn't be tied to a quote. Check it or delete it.

  5. 5

    Build the deck

Copy titles and bullets into PowerPoint, Keynote or Google Slides, and the notes into each slide's speaker notes. Keep the PDF of the outline as your source list.

Make it presentable

Bullets are kept short (about 20 words) so they fit a slide. Add the original charts where numbers matter, because the outline can't read charts. Put the source page in the speaker notes so you can answer “where does that come from?” during the talk.
